The authoritative European newspaper Politico placed the Maltese Member of the European Parliament Alex Agius Saliba in the People To Watch section in the digital sector for 2022. In Politico’s opinion, Alex Agius Saliba forms part of a small group of politicians who are expected to have strong influence on European digital policy, a Labour Party statement said.
This is not the first time that this newspaper chose Agius Saliba as a key politician having an impact on European politics, as in the past it had chosen him as one of ‘20 MEPs to watch in 2020’ and shortly thereafter, as one of the Key Players in the digital field.
The Labour MEP is leading the negotiations on behalf of the European Parliament that will get the European Union the long-promised one common charger for various electronic equipment, which will mean less inconvenience and less expenses for European citizens. As part of these negotiations, Agius Saliba is holding important high-level discussions in the European Parliament, with the other European institutions and also, with several technological giants such as Apple.
Politico said that 2022 will be a very important year for MEP Agius Saliba, as he continues to work to make this common charger available for several categories of equipment used on a daily basis, including laptops. The newspaper explains how Agius Saliba is also looking at the environmental picture, as this change will be important to drastically reduce electronic waste across the European Union, where currently, between 11 and 13 thousand tonnes of electronic waste coming from chargers is generated every year.
Agius Saliba welcomed this analysis and the attention that Politico is giving to his contribution in the digital sector. He said that this fills him with more courage and determination to work harder in this field, which will continue to bear fruits and yield very positive and tangible results for European citizens.
