Record seven Covid-19 patients die in single day, as 273 new cases are reported

Seven Covid-19 patients have died while 273 new cases of the virus were reported by health authorities on Sunday.

Authorities said that three men aged 86, 86, and 89 and four women aged 74, 81, 86, and 89 had died while positive for Covid-19.

It is a record day in terms of deaths, with the previous one being six, reached on Wednesday.

202 women and 330 men have now died while positive for Covid-19 in Malta, and this is also the worst week in terms of deaths recorded – with 26 deaths registered, compared to 23 deaths between 8 and 14 November 2020.

It also reflects the spike in cases experienced during the month of December, as health sources told The Malta Independent on Sunday this weekend.

1,431 people meanwhile have recovered from the virus, taking the number of active cases down to 5,761.

93 patients are currently receiving treatment in Mater Dei Hospital, with six of those being in intensive care.

1,193,682 doses of the vaccine have been administered so far, with 321,351 of those being booster doses.

Malta has had 65,807 cases of the virus so far.  59,131 of those have recovered, while 532 have died.
