Rosianne Cutajar’s appointment as chair of parliamentary committee 'insult to Parliament' - PN

The Opposition said Wednesday that the new appointment of Labour MP Rosianne Cutajar as the president of the parliamentary health committee was an insult to the House.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, PN MP Robert Cutajar said that despite what was revealed in the Standards Committee report which found Cutajar in breach of ethics, she was still given a position as head of a parliamentary committee.

The Standards Committee, on 9 November, had adopted the conclusions and recommendations of a report that found Cutajar in breach of ethics. Standards Commissioner George Hyzler had found that Cutajar more likely than not had received a €46,000 brokerage payment, not declaring it.

This is the first appointment for Cutajar since her resignation from her position of parliamentary secretary for equality.

Robert Cutajar argued that the motion was moved for Rosianne Cutajar’s appointment without informing the Opposition. Rather the government chose to proceed with this tacitly and quietly.

PL MP Rosianne Cutajar was appointed as the president of the parliamentary health committee on Monday after Deputy Minister Chris Fearne moved a motion for her appointment.

The motion for her appointment was not objected to by the Opposition on Monday.

Meanwhile, PL MP Edward Zammit Lewis counter-argued, saying that the motion was approved when it was presented to the House on Monday.

“Issues of procedural nature should be raised at the right time, and not now when the vote has been granted and deemed valid,” Zammit Lewis said.
