Fixing price of bread: ‘We need to safeguard people’s wellbeing in time of crisis’ - Grech

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech defended the PN's proposal to fix the price of bread, saying the party wants to safeguard the wellbeing of all during this time of crisis.

Grech first made the announcement on Tuesday evening. Local producers have warned that they are finding it hard to source wheat as a result of shortages and bans caused by the Ukrainian crisis.

Asked by this newsroom whether the PN wanted a return to times when the government controlled the market, Grech said the party "believes in the free market, in fact we had introduced it to Malta in the 1980's."

"However, we have to appreciate the situation. We must help the producers, and bread is a staple food. We must safeguard the wellbeing of all, especially in a time of crisis. The government is not yet acknowledging the gravity of the situation."

At this juncture we need a serious leadership, not management by crisis, Grech continued. "We need to take necessary decisions according to the unfolding circumstances."

Asked about PN supporters who are saying they will not vote over the way Adrian Delia had been ousted, Grech said he respects their opinion. "However, I will keep trying to convince them. Adrian Delia is a party candidate, he is still part of the PN.  There are no difficulties now, the party is united, focused. I will keep chasing after every vote, including those of these supporters and Labour voters, because change has to come from each and every one of us."
