PN condemns illegal hunting of protected birds

Friday, 22 April 2022, 18:24 Last update: about 3 years ago

The PN has condemned the killing of protected birds, which it said reflected irresponsible acts of illegal hunting.

"In two separate incidents, 10 protected birds known as Marsh Harriers were injured. They were found wounded and some of them killed in the area of Delimara in Marsaxlokk. This type of bird finds refuge in these areas during the spring. It is a criminal act for these birds to be hunted," the party said.

The PN said that while is understands, respects, and accepts the democratic result achieved in the 2015 referendum in favour of spring hunting, the party will not tolerate abuse.

The PN called for more enforcement and ongoing patrol systems in spaces where hunting occurs, so that abuses are controlled.

It said that it is necessary that those caught committing these abuses are penalized as required by law.

The statement was signed by PN spokesperson for the Environment and Animal rights Janice Chetcuti, and PN spokesperson for hobbies and the cost-of-living Charles Azzopardi.
