Minister for Transport Aaron Farrugia announced a record 500% growth in the aviation register over the past decade, with 665 aircraft currently registered in Malta.

Speaking at a press conference in Lija, Farrugia said that despite the impact of the pandemic, the number of aircraft registered in Malta and the number of companies transferring their business to the country has grown.

He said that the strength and reputation of the country in this sector, as well as the government’s commitment and the work of the Civil Aviation Directorate within Transport Malta has factored into this growth.

Farrugia said that the increase in the number of aircraft registered shows an expression of trust by companies investing in Malta.

“This type of foreign direct investment is important for Malta as it stimulated economic growth and provides job opportunities,” he said.

Farrugia said that the government plans to remain focused and efficient and that excessive bureaucracy will be an issue to be tackled with. He added that the government will commit itself to listening to stakeholders and persons in the industry in consultations.

“This growth needs to be sustainable, both fiscally and environmentally,” Farrugia said, adding that the country needs to continue strengthening its tourist product.

Transport Malta Executive Chairman Joe Bugeja and Director General for Civil Aviation Directorate Charles Pace also attended the conference.
