Pro-choice activist assaulted on the roadside – NGO

A pro-choice activist was assaulted on the roadside on Tuesday, the NGO Doctors for Choice said on social media.

Professor Isabel Stabile is a well-known pro-choice activist and gynaecologist who is a founding member of Doctors for Choice – an NGO which advocates for the legalisation of abortion in Malta, which as a country continues to have the most restrictive laws on abortion in the world.

Stabile is one of the activists who have taken to Malta’s roads in recent days and weeks with pro-choice placards as part of a campaign being run by the NGO.

Doctors for Choice said that shortly after she was interviewed by the Times of Malta, Stabile was “physically assaulted by a female individual.”

“A police report has been filed and we have asked for the perpetrator to be prosecuted. Thankfully, Prof Stabile did not sustain any injuries,” the NGO said.

“We take such incidents extremely seriously to protect our activists. From now on, we shall be providing our activists with body cams so they can better record such incidents in the future. We have zero tolerance to violent behaviour and will report all such incidents to the police and request criminal prosecution,” it continued.
