Engerer to be S&D’s delegate to investigate the European Union Asylum Agency’s work in Malta

PL MEP Cyrus Engerer has been entrusted by the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats to be their representative on an official European Parliament mission to the European Union Asylum Agency in Malta focusing on migration.

Engerer, who is Malta's only MEP sitting on the European Parliaments Migration committee, was chosen for the mission by the S&D Group after being appointed their spokesperson on multiple reports and legislative files relating to EU migration policy, such as the EU's most recent revamp of the Reception Conditions Directive.

Upon his appointment Engerer said that: "The European Union is at a new momentum when it comes to EU Migration policy, following the crisis in Ukraine. We are finally seeing EU Solidarity in practice, with a clear and proportionate distribution of Ukrainian asylum seekers across the European Union. No single Member State feels alone in the Ukrainian-Russian crises, and this is how it should be in all cases".

Engerer said that he will be using this precedent and this momentum to push for a permanent solidarity mechanism, one that distributes the responsibility of processing asylum applications of arrivals throughout the EU Member States in a fair and proportionate way based on their resources, and not their geographical placement.

Engerer, who is also the Maltese appointee on the Socialists and Democrats High Level Working Group on Migration, and therefore has a seat at the decision making table, will be joining 6 other Members of the European Parliament from the different political groups across the political spectrum.

The delegation is expected to visit the European Union Asylum Agency in May and is expected to meet with high level officials of the agency.
