Malta extends particular (negative) record at Eurovision… what is it?

The elimination of Emma Muscat from the Eurovision Song Contest final has made sure that Malta retained – and extended – a particular record.

Malta holds the record of the longest wait for a first win, having debuted in 1971.

Cyprus has taken part 36 times without winning, but its debut was in 1981.

Malta has taken part in 34 contests (35, if one adds Destiny in 2020, a competition that was not held because of the Covid-19 pandemic), but it has never made it to the top spot.

Malta came close twice, finishing in second place in 2002 with Ira Losco and her song Seventh Wonder, and in 2005 with Chiara and her song Angel.

Malta also twice finished third, in 1992 - Mary Spiteri, Little Child, and in 1998, Chiara, The One that I Love.

This means that Malta is the country with the most top three places that has never won the contest.

Twenty-seven countries have won the competition at least once.

Malta has fared better in the junior competition, winning it twice.
