Civil society NGO Repubblika is demanding that Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa resign, for failing to take action against business people and politicians.
The NGO's President Robert Aquilina delivered a speech at a protest in front of the Police Headquarters. He said that the commissioner fostered a culture of injustice and division in the police force.
Aquilina said that the NGO was hopeful the commissioner would right the wrongs of his predecessor, but said that two years later, "we completely lost hope," and the only way forward is for Gafa to resign.
The force, he said, remained in the same state as what the Public Inquiry into Daphne Caruana Galizia's murder found it in. He described it as a police force of impunity, friends of friends and tolerance of corruption.
He said that Gafa failed to charge Joseph Muscat, Keith Schembri, Konrad Mizzi, Edward Scicluna and Chris Cardona. He said the Commissioner also failed to charge former police officers like Lawrence Cutajar and others.
Turning to the recent Iosif Galea scandal, Aquilina said that Gafa knew there was someone in the police preventing the force from taking action against Galea, and did nothing to tackle that.
Aquilina also criticised the Commissioner for a number of other issues, and that he did not continue investigating cases undergoing magisterial inquiries, did not follow up on the Pilatus Bank inquiry.
