A restaurant owner was on Saturday charged with the murder of another man in a St Paul’s Bay restaurant.

Before Magistrate Victor Axiak, David Busuttil, 59, who is the owner of Munchies Bar in Triq it-Turisti, was charged with killing a 60-year-old man, who fell down the stairs after an argument. He was also charged with causing serious injury, trying to erase evidence and breaching public peace.

The incident took place on Friday at 1.30am.

The prosecution explained to the court that at 3am on Friday the police was informed that a man was in critical condition in hospital. The man later died of blood haemorrhage.

The prosecution said that the incident was captured on CCTV cameras. The accused tried to wipe out the footage, the prosecution said, objecting to the bail request from the defence.

The defence argued that Busuttil, a former Rabat Ajax footballer, was defending himself and this could be confirmed by the CCTV footage.

The court denied Busuttil bail.

Dr Abigail Caruana Vella, Dr Nathaniel Falzon and Inspector Shaun Pawney are leading the prosecution.

Dr Franco Debono and Dr Marion Camilleri are defence counsel.

On Friday, the police said in a statement a 60-year-old man died after falling down the stairs during a fight in a St Paul’s Bay establishment.

The police had then said that they were treating the incident as a homicide.
