Two resolutions and other documentation related to the agreement between the American University of Malta and SmartCity Malta have been tabled before Parliament’s National Audit Office Accounts Committee.
This means that, in less than 100 days of a new administration, the government has kept its promise of protecting virgin land at Zonqor Point in Marsascala that had previously been earmarked for an AUM campus.
It also means that land in Cospicua that was to be developed by AUM will be given back to the public while the development of SmartCity will continue, the economy ministry said.
The government will be acquiring back land in Smart City to be used for several initiatives, including the relocation of the university.
A new campus for the Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) will also be built at the Kalkara site. There will also be new public open spaces.
The area that is being retaken by government in Zonqor will form part of the Inwadar National Park, the ministry added.
