Ship captain arrested in connection with alleged illegal fishing

The captain of a ship that was allegedly fishing illegally in Maltese territorial waters, the police said Monday.

In a statement, the police said that officials from the Fisheries Department, the AFM and the police inspected a Tunisian vessel that berthed at Xatt il-Barrieri on Sunday.

On Monday, the vessel was taken to the Marsa Landing Facility for further inspections by the police’s Environmental Protection Unit.

It resulted that the vessel did not have a licence to operate in Maltese waters.

The captain, a 29-year-old Tunisian man, was arrested.

Some 500 kilogrammes of fish and fishing equipment was confiscated.

The captain is set to be charged in court.
