The Syrian community in Malta, the Syrian Solidarity in Malta NGO said, have condemned the 20-man brawl involving Syrians in Hamrun.

Two people were hospitalised on Thursday after being involved in a brawl in Hamrun. The fight broke out between a group of Syrians close to the Hamrun police station, with over 20 men being involved.

"In light of what happened in Hamrun on Thursday, the Syrian people in Malta disassociate themselves from the incident that occurred and condemn any kind of violence," the NGO said in a Facebook post.

"We, as Syrians, remain committed to living in peace in Maltese society with respect and obedience to the laws of Malta. As Syrians in Malta, we are grateful to the Maltese people for the hospitality they offered us, after many of us asked for asylum because our country is not in a safe state," it said.

The statement read that the Syrian people remain committed to working hand in hand with the Maltese government so that they can have more opportunities to integrate into Maltese society.

"We invite the Maltese authorities to meet with us so that we can dialogue, move forward, and promote everyone's well-being. We reiterate that there should not be a generalization on an entire community due to the actions of individuals," the NGO said.
