TVM journalist gets hit by sexist comments after Queen mistake

Tuesday, 22 November 2022, 14:51 Last update: about 11 months ago

A TVM journalist has been the victim of sexist comments after she erroneously referred to the “queen as being happy” about England’s World Cup win.

Joanna Camilleri wrote on her Facebook page that since her comment she has been hit by a barrage of insults on the social media.

Is this the way you want women to work, she commented.

Camilleri was taking part in a TVM programme following England’s 6-2 win against Iran at the World Cup. The moment she made reference to the queen, she was immediately corrected by presenter Mark Attard, to which Camilleri replied that the queen must have prayed for the England side.

Footage of her mistake has been making the rounds on the social media, prompting many to criticise her present. There were some disparaging comments made, which Camilleri herself uploaded on Facebook.

“Why so much hate?” she wrote.

The Malta Sports Journalists Association has issued a statement defending Camilleri.

The Institute of Maltese Journalists joined the Sports Journalists Association in expressing solidarity with sports journalist Joanna Camilleri. "The IĠM condemns this behaviour, which is only intended to intimidate and discourage journalists, especially female journalists, from exercising their duty."
