Abortion debate: President, PM hold regular meetings

Saturday, 3 December 2022, 09:02 Last update: about 2 years ago

The President and the Prime Minister hold regular meetings on the country’s political situation, and the last one was held on Wednesday, the Department of Information said.

Both the OPM and the OPR issued a statement this morning to deny a story that was published in Times of Malta, which spoke about the Prime Minister “snubbing” President George Vella on the abortion amendment currently being debated in Parliament.

The Times story is based on incorrect information, the OPM said.

The PM holds regular meetings with the President, and the last one was held on Wednesday at San Anton Palace.

In a later statement, The Office of the President confirms the statement of the Office of the Prime Minister that last Wednesday, 30th November, the Prime Minister and the President of Malta held the meeting they hold on a regular basis according to constitutional duties.

The government is at present pushing for a law which many are interpreting as being opening the door to abortion. President Vella has in the past expressed the intention to resign if Parliament decides to legalise abortion.
