Updated: No public inquiry into Sofia death: Who is the PM trying to defend? – PN asks

Thursday, 2 February 2023, 13:53 Last update: about 3 months ago

Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech asked who is Prime Minister Robert Abela defending given that there will be no public inquiry into the death of a young man following to collapse of a building in Kordin last December.

In reply to a parliamentary question filed by PN MP Jerome Caruana Cilia, Abela said that no public inquiry will be called to look into the death of Jean Paul Sofia. The 20-year old lost his life in December when a three-storey building collapsed in Kordin; it took 16 hours for the Civil Protection Department to clear the rubble and retrieve his body.

In a message on the social media, Grech said the young man’s family should know the truth. What is the PM trying to hide and who is he defending, Grech asked.

The country has let down Jean Paul Sofia’s family. A public inquiry is the least the country could do, he said.

In reply, the Labour Party said that a magisterial inquiry is underway. That the Opposition Leader is calling for a public inquiry implies that he has no confidence in the magistrate conducting it. Is he saying that the magistrate in question is hiding something, the PL asked.
