LESA working on introducing bodycams for officials

Monday, 6 February 2023, 17:50 Last update: about 2 years ago

The Local Environmental Safety Agency (LESA) is looking into supplying their officers with bodycams, Minister for Home Affairs Byron Camilleri has said.

The Minister was answering a question posed by PN MP Robert Cutajar, who inquired as to whether LESA was going to supply wardens with bodycams and whether they'll also be issued with new uniforms that are more comfortable and more practical.

In response to this second question, Camilleri said that LESA is still undertaking market research, so it's not yet clear whether new uniforms will be provided.

Cutajar then went on to ask the Minister for Environment, Energy, and Enterprise Miriam Dalli whether bodycams will be supplied to park rangers.

In response, Dalli said that "these wardens are not covered by a legal framework that gives them the ability to enforce the laws against those who break them. I have thus been informed that data protection laws do not legally permit the rangers to use this equipment."
