A new green area measuring 17,000 sqm has been opened to the public at the Bengħajsa Family Park.

Project Green will be responsible for maintaining this park. This was announced on Wednesday when Environment Minister Miriam Dalli and CEO of Project Green Steve Ellul visited the park.

The Environment Ministry said that this family park is the third green space that is being opened this year, after the opening of the Dog Park in Ta' Qali and the extension of the Park in San Klement, Żabbar.

The picnic area is the size of two football pitches and it is equipped with benches made from a sustainable material, signs which have information about different trees and shrubs, and there are also obstacle structures for children to enjoy.

4,000 trees were planted by various entities including Infrastructure Malta and Ambjent Malta. 1,800 of these trees were planted as part of an initiative with Puttinu Cares where for every donation of €300 or more from the public to Puttinu, a tree or shrub was planted.

Dalli said that before this family park, in were development plans for a landfill or an extension of a commercial project in this area.

"Instead, the residents of Birżebbuġa will be enjoying one of the largest parks in the south of Malta. I encourage the public to come and enjoy this green space," Dalli said.

Dalli also mentioned an agreement that was signed with the Malta Girl Guides, so that they can use the park for their activities.

Ellul said that Project Green is adapting open spaces for the community so that everyone can enjoy them, even those who use a wheelchair. For wheelchair access, the picnic benches have been adapted so that people in wheelchairs also have space at the table.

He said that the agreement signed with Malta Girl Guides will assist this organisation to continue hosting activities so that the children have a safe space to learn.

The park is open from 6:30am to 9:00pm from April to September and from 6:30am to 7:00pm from October to March
