A judge has sentenced a man to eight years in jail after finding him guilty of raping an elderly man and a woman on the same day in Hamrun.

The incidents took place in July last year, with the man first pleading not guilty, but later changing the plea to guilty.

Mr Justice Aaron Bugeja sentenced the man, Abdel Yousef Abib, 22, of Somalia, to eight years in prison

Abdul Yousef Abib was charged with having raped the two victims, committing non-consensual sex acts, holding the victims against their will and slightly injuring them. He was further charged with stealing the man’s mobile phone. The incidents took place on 19 July last year.

Sordid details of what took place in Hamrun on the day were revealed in court, with both the man and the woman describing how they were accosted by the accused, and who then proceeded with his abuse.

Inspector Joseph Busuttil had told the court that two officers stationed at the Hamrun station were alerted to a commotion outside at around 2am.

They ran out and found the woman, with her underwear down to her ankles, and the alleged aggressor getting off her and running away. The woman told officers the aggressor had pulled down her underwear and stuffed his fingers inside her, causing her to bleed.

While the police were interviewing the woman, an ambulance stopped with the elderly man inside. He too had experienced a similar incident, telling police that the aggressor had stolen his phone before pulling down his pants and stuffing his fingers into his anus.

Mr Justice Bugeja also fined Abib €5,940 in court expenses.

But he ruled that he did not have the power to order the man’s deportation.
