The Nationalist Party expressed its appreciation to police officers who carry out their duties diligently in spite of the internal difficulties being faced by the corps.

In a statement on the 210th anniversary of the setting up of the police force, through its home affairs spokesman Darren Carabott the PN said it showed its support to the Corps by a bill it tabled a few days ago to ensure more police autonomy.

It said that this is a day where the daily commitment, dedication and courage of the Maltese police officers to serve their country and ensure public order are acknowledged and remembered. It added that this is a time to look back and remember those individuals who were hurt or even lost their lives in the line of duty.

The PN said that this gratitude is shown in a time where there is a need to show appreciation to police officers of good will and who wish to work without fear or bias.

The PN said that part of its commitment to the Police Corps, as the Nationalist Party, was announced when it presented a bill in parliament that seeks to give more independence and autonomy to the running of the Police Corps. It proposed that this would be done by the Police Commissioner being appointed by the President of the Republic following a 2/3 majority approval in parliament.

The PN said that in this way, it will ensure that, as stated in the Constitution, the Police Corps will have independent leadership worthy of its serving officials and the country.
