A fire broke out at an Enemalta substation in Gzira on Monday, leaving over 3,000 people without electricity.
The incident led to power outages in the area.
The police confirmed with The Malta Independent on Monday that they were informed of the fire at around 1pm which happened at Triq Sir Patrick Stuart in Gzira.
Police told this newsroom that the fire broke out in a garage in the street which had apartment blocks above it.
The Civil Protection Department (CPD), the police, as well as an ambulance went on site, however, the fire was controlled and there were no injuries, the police spokesperson said.
An Enemalta spokesperson confirmed that the fire took place at an Enemalta substation.
In a statement issued later on on Facebook, Enemalta said that the power outage in the area affected 3,276 customers.
“Enemalta restored service to the majority of homes and businesses in less than an hour, and currently, about 309 customers remain without power, those being directly connected to this substation,” it said at around 2:45pm.
Enemalta said it is working to provide an alternative power supply temporarily until the necessary repairs are carried out.
It said that Enemalta's technical teams are on-site to assist members of the CPD and begin the necessary preparations for the required repairs. It thanked all workers for their immediate interventions.
