Labour Party MEP Daniel Attard has declared his support to Jason Micallef as a potential candidate for the position of PL Deputy Leader for party affairs.
PL is set to hold elections this coming September for a number of executive roles within the party. The post is currently occupied by Daniel Micallef, who announced his resignation soon after the MEP and local council elections and is staying on until his successor is appointed. Labour will also need to elect a deputy leader for parliamentary affairs after the resignation of Chris Fearne.
Writing on Facebook, Attard said that Micallef is of grassroots origin and that he has climbed the party structure “step by step … with work and without pretensions”. He remarked that there have been many over the last few days who have come to him expressing that they want to see Micallef take on the position of Deputy Leader. He said that he is in agreement with them.
Going over some of Micallef’s previous roles as a member of PL, Attard said that Micallef was one of the first PL councillors to succeed in the Mosta locality and that he was trusted to take on the role of General Secretary.
“He successfully managed various internal party structures and election campaigns, and later carried out a complete transformation in our stations,” the MEP said.
Micallef is currently the CEO of the Valletta Cultural Agency, and Attard said that Micallef has led an “unprecedented economic and social regeneration” in Valletta, “which is today appreciated by everyone of goodwill.” He added that Micallef is now doing the same in the Ta’ Qali National Park.
The MEP remarked that in the words of Prime Minister Robert Abela, “With Jason Micallef your mind is at ease that he will work and fulfil.”
Attard concluded by saying that Micallef is consistent and has integrity, and that he considers Micallef to be “the best for what the Labour Party needs in the role of Deputy Leader”.
Micallef has not announced any interest in the post. Applications will be received between 23 and 25 August while the election will be held on 13-14 September
