The government is not raising the age of retirement nor the rate of social security contributions, Social Policy Minister Michael Falzon said as he spoke during Tuesday's Parliament session.
He said this in reference to some reactions which had come out following the unveiling of Budget 2025 on Monday, where concern was raised regarding the government potentially raising the age of retirement and increasing the rates for social security contributions. Falzon continued that for people who were born in 1976 and onwards, they would have to go through 42 years of social security contributions to qualify for the pension.
The Social Policy Minister commented that measures such as this are planned long-term. He said that Malta is currently in a situation of "full employment", meaning that it is not a difficulty for someone to begin working. He added that this is a measure of sustainability which shows responsibility.
