Government says mistakes in teachers’ payments to be rectified

Saturday, 2 November 2024, 04:40 Last update: about 2 months ago

The government said Friday that mistakes in the salaries received by teachers will be rectified, and a support system has been put in place to help individuals affected.

The Education Ministry was referring to issues related to the salaries received by teachers that were to reflect the changed made in the collective agreement signed earlier this year. While most teachers received their dues as established by the agreement, others got "incorrect" amounts. Some received less and some received more, with the individuals concerned either asked to return the extra money while the government scrambled to assure all those who received less that they will be getting what they are owed.

Anyone involved in these discrepancies are asked to send an email to [email protected] to have it sorted.

The government also referred to a cicrcular it issued regarding public participation by teachers on the media. The Nationalist Party has accused the government of trying tu muzzle teachers, a position that the Education Ministry has refuted.

This circular, the government said, "speaks clearly" on this participation, and contrary to what the PN is saying, it encourages teachers to speak up. The government however admitted that when individuals, as public officers, appear in public, they should do so "with the full and correct" information.

It is unacceptable that the PN is intimidating public officers in this way, the government said.
