Ongoing works in the Hamrun and Msida police stations are expected to finish in the year 2026, Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said as he replied to a parliamentary question posed by Nationalist Party MP Darren Carabott.
Carabott asked the Minister to state which police stations are currently undergoing works and to say what the works are as well as provide the prospective date for the opening of the relevant stations.
Camilleri said that the major projects vary from those of new buildings, to the renovation of existing buildings, to the reopening of buildings that had been closed for years. He continued that this re-opening is being done particularly as offices for community police and with specialised sections such as the domestic violence hubs, of which he said one has already opened in Santa Lucia, and another will be opening in Mtarfa.
"The police have never been as close to the community as they are today," the Minister commented.
Regarding works in police stations, he said that works are underway as part of the renovation program in police stations and other properties. In addition to the works at the Hamrun and Msida offices which are expected to finish in 2026, he said that the work in San Gwann is expected to finish soon, while the work in Rabat is expected to finish in a few more months.
He added that these works join others, including the second domestic violence hub in Mtarfa, the K9 section, the police garage, and the command and control room.
The Minister remarked that in recent years, the police force has taken great initiatives to improve the environment where police work and where people are welcomed to be serviced by the police.
