Prime Minister Robert Abela visited the Santa Marija Community, where a rehabilitation programme provides support for individuals struggling with substance dependence, including drugs and alcohol.
Accompanied by Social Policy Minister Michael Falzon and the CEO of the Foundation for Social Welfare Services (FSWS) Alfred Grixti, Abela acknowledged the continuous commitment of Agenzija Sedqa within FSWS, a government statement on Thursday said.
He said that this programme not only helps individuals overcome their addictions, but also supports their reintegration into society, giving them the necessary assistance to start anew.
During his visit, Abela had the opportunity to meet with residents of the community and observe firsthand how the programme operates.
The programme follows a therapeutic community model, where residents actively participate in the management of the residence.
He was shown the living quarters and saw how the facility is run with the involvement of all residents.
The visit concluded with a meeting where residents shared their personal experiences and challenges on their journey toward rehabilitation.
Abela spoke of the investment made by FSWS in rehabilitation services that offer long-term solutions for individuals seeking change.
"This government's policy has always been to ensure that every member of society receives the necessary support, equal opportunities, and the chance to succeed. This community is a testament to that commitment," Abela said.
Abela said government is working to give hope to those facing drug dependence challenges and is committed to strengthening these programmes to provide more individuals with the opportunity to build a better future.
The Santa Marija Community programme is structured into three residential phases and a follow-up aftercare phase, ensuring that residents receive continuous guidance throughout their journey.
The programme provides psychological and therapeutic support, as well as training sessions and educational activities, helping individuals develop new skills and gain independence.
Residents who spoke with Abela shared stories of struggle and perseverance, explaining how the Santa Marija Community programme has given them hope and the tools necessary to rebuild their lives in a healthy way while reintegrating into society as best as possible.
Abela also recognized the dedicated work of the professionals running the centre, describing it as a model of how social services can act as catalysts for positive change in people's lives.
"This is an investment in people's lives, an investment in a more inclusive and just society where everyone is given a second chance," Abela said.
He also met with patients currently receiving treatment at the Substance Misuse Inpatient Unit (SMIPU), also known as Dar l-Impenn.
This facility is the only medical centre in Malta providing observation and stabilization for individuals battling substance dependence, the statement said.
Part of Agenzija Sedqa within FSWS, the facility can accommodate up to seven individuals referred by doctors specializing in addiction treatment.
The primary goal of Dar l-Impenn is to provide intensive medical care for a short period, typically between seven and ten days, under the supervision of healthcare professionals.
Despite the limited duration of care, this facility plays a crucial role in giving individuals a vital opportunity to embark on their recovery journey and receive the necessary support to overcome their addiction, the statement said.
