The National Working Group on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) involvement officially launched the fourth edition of the National STEM Community Fund for 2025.
This was announced during a press conference by the Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research, and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti.
This fund, managed by the Interactive Science Centre, Esplora, on behalf of Science Malta, aims to inspire and support community projects focused on STEM, a government statement read. "For 2025, the total budget of the fund will be €100,000, representing a 300% increase compared to previous years. Each winning project will be eligible to receive up to €10,000 in financial support."
The Fund encourages schools, local councils, museums, NGOs, and other community groups to apply, it said. These entities are invited to collaborate with a STEM professional to create projects that are both innovative in the scientific field and offer tangible and sustainable benefits to their communities.
Parliamentary Secretary Keith Azzopardi Tanti said: "The Government is committed to continuing its investment in the research and innovation sector. That is why, in addition to tripling the funding compared to previous years, we are also increasing the maximum cap per project from €8,000 to €10,000. This is not just a financial increase but a confirmation of our commitment to allocating the wealth being generated back to our citizens, ensuring that the opportunities created are of high quality."
"STEM is fundamental in building a future where our country grows economically and socially. This is all part of a clear and concrete vision we have as a Government - Malta Vision 2050 - a vision that looks ahead, and even with the steps we take today, we are working to create new prosperity that reaches workers and their families. We believe that the greatest resource of this country is its people," Azzopardi Tanti concluded.
The CEO of Science Malta, Silvio Scerri, said that "this initiative is about collaboration and harnessing the collective power of people, ideas, and expertise. This fund will provide the necessary tools for those with a clear vision to make a tangible impact."
For her part, Irene Mangion, who will be leading the projects under this fund, said: "In line with the European Union's efforts to recognize citizens' contributions in gathering scientific data and developing creative solutions for social challenges, we will also be offering our support for these valuable initiatives."
STEM subjects are not only educational or academic; they are crucial for the future economy-an economy that is sustainable, digital, and built on high-quality skills. This Fund empowers citizens-both young and old-to use STEM in a practical way to solve problems and improve well-being in their communities, with the support of researchers and experts, the government said.
"In the 2024 edition, €24,000 in funds were distributed, supporting a range of projects that fostered collaboration between community institutions and STEM professionals."
Applications for the 2025 edition of the National STEM Community Fund are open until 23 May. Eligible organizations wishing to apply can obtain more information and submit their applications by contacting [email protected].
