Officers from the disciplined forces have started to receive payments from the government as recognition for serving for more than 29 years, the government said.
€1.22 million has been paid out through the first payment, covering 1 October 2023 to the end of September 2024. This was a measure announced in the budget, the government said.
"Those benefiting from this measure are working additional years over the 29-years of service, and are now benefitting from this payment which, over four years is equivalent to two year's pay, and which is calculated on the basic salary grade in which the official is serving." Workers have the option to either receive this payment at the end of the four additional years after the 29 years of service, or annually over those four years, government said.
Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment Byron Camilleri stated that this is a direct investment in the conditions of the Disciplinary Corps and in their families, and that this is how their work is truly recognized. He noted that these payments complement other improvements made by this government to their working conditions, including enhancements to the service pension.
