Farrugia was welcomed by Australian High Commissioner to Malta Matt Skelly, along with the Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of New Zealand to Spain, accredited to Malta, Blake van Helden. The Office of the President said that there are over 1,300 Commonwealth soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War and are buried at the military cemetery.

During the ceremony, the Office of the President continued, Farrugia and other dignitaries laid a wreath on behalf of the Maltese people as a show of respect and recognition towards those who lost their lives at war.

It concluded that the ceremony also served as a reminder of the important role that Malta played during the war, which it said clearly highlighted the bravery of the Maltese in the service provided to the wounded.
