A new agreement between Transport Malta and Ambjent Malta will see road beautification and landscaping works carried out during off-peak hours in a bid to reduce traffic disruption and improve road efficiency.
The initiative was announced by Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, Chris Bonett, who presided over the signing of the agreement.
The measure forms part of the government's wider "Reshaping Our Mobility" strategy, a package of reforms rolled out over 18 months to address Malta's growing traffic and urban mobility challenges. The shift in working hours is expected to alleviate unnecessary congestion, lower emissions caused by traffic delays, and contribute to a better quality of life.
"This agreement is another step in our plan to make better use of our existing roads and infrastructure," Minister Bonett said. "It clearly demonstrates the Government's commitment to implementing practical solutions that enhance mobility and daily life for our communities. Ambjent Malta will now be able to carry out essential work without causing avoidable traffic congestion."
Under the terms of the agreement, road-related beautification and landscaping works must be scheduled outside peak hours - defined as 06:00 to 09:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 on weekdays, and 09:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays. Exceptions are permitted in cases where the work does not affect traffic flow.
To ensure seamless coordination, a joint planning and monitoring structure will be established between the two entities. Each organisation will appoint dedicated officers responsible for overseeing scheduling, compliance, and operational progress, the government said in a statement. Ambjent Malta will also carry the responsibility of ensuring all works adhere strictly to health and safety regulations, including the use of appropriate signage and traffic management systems where needed.
The agreement was officially signed by Kurt Farrugia, CEO of Transport Malta, and Herman Galea, Director General of Ambjent Malta.
