€1.3 million paid up for Mater Dei health services in 2025 by 1,787 third-country nationals

A sum of just over €1.3 million has been collected from third-country nationals using Mater Dei Hospital's medical services as of 2025 so far, Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela revealed in Parliament on Wednesday.

During Wednesday's plenary session, on 2 July, the Minister for Health shared that a total of €1,323,284.36 was paid by 1,787 third-country nationals for the use of healthcare received at Mater Dei Hospital this year so far.

This data was tabled after being requested by PN MP Ivan Bartolo. Minister Abela's response did not divulge in how much money is still pending to be paid in relation to these services by third-country nationals.

Under a month ago, Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela stated in Parliament, answering a parliamentary question put forward by PN MP Graziella Attard Previ, that 958 third-country nationals at the time owed outstanding pending bills related to health services. Amongst them, 162 third-country nationals were said to owe over €1,000 each in medical bills.

In relation to these pending bills, Health Minister Abela had outlined that from these 162 persons, 125 third-country nationals owed between €1,001 and €5,000, 23 owed between €5,001 and €10,000, while 14 foreigners owed over €10,000 in outstanding medical payments.
