The prisoner who was found dead in prison on Sunday night was one of the original suspects in the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder, this newsroom can confirm.

Seven men had been arrested on 4 December, but only three were eventually charged with the murder.

According to reports, the police have said they are treating the death as natural but it is also being reported that the prisoner died after ingesting a toxic substance.

The police said on Monday that the body was found inside a cell late on Sunday. There were no external signs of violence, but a magisterial inquiry has been launched.
