Facilities at 19 beaches across Malta have been upgraded through works aimed at improving safety, accessibility and comfort during the peak summer season, the government said.

The interventions carried out by the Tourist Areas Regeneration Agency included the installation or improvement of seven lifeguard towers, 910 metres of walkways, 67 waste bins, 14 showers, four changing rooms, 10 ladders providing access to the sea and four information boards.

The works were carried out in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority at beaches including Mellieħa Bay, Golden Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa Bay, Buġibba Perched Beach, Qawra Point, Fond Għadir, St George’s Bay and Fajtata Bay.

Works were also carried out at Wignacourt and is-Simenta in St Paul’s Bay, where walkways and steps were built, as well as at Armier, Little Armier and other areas in Mellieħa.

Local Government and Public Works Minister Alison Zerafa Civelli announced the works during a visit to one of the beaches that benefited from the interventions, accompanied by the agency’s chief executive, Dennis Vella.

Zerafa Civelli said the government was continuing to invest in public spaces so that Maltese families and tourists could enjoy safer, more accessible and better-equipped beaches.

“Beaches are among the most used public spaces during the summer, and therefore it is our duty to continue investing in them,” she said.

The minister also appealed to visitors to help keep beaches clean and dispose of their waste responsibly.

Vella said the interventions followed a period of planning and coordination to ensure that the facilities were ready for use during the summer season.

Workers from the Cleaning and Maintenance Division are also carrying out daily cleaning and maintenance at the beaches, including repairs and other interventions where required.

The ministry said the work was intended to ensure that the thousands of Maltese residents, Gozitans and tourists visiting beaches every day could use clean, safe and accessible facilities.
