Malta Independent Saturday, 21 January 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

A massive Mega Sports event was organised, for the second consecutive year, within the Cottonera Sports Complex run by the Kunsill Malti għall-iSport.

This Mega event was a prelude for the much awaited SportMalta Awards L-Għażliet Sportivi Nazzjonali being held this evening.

The Sports Complex was packed with over 2,800 students from various schools from all around the island together with the national athletes who are finalists in next Saturday’s awards night. The main aim of the Mega event was to create more awareness for the SportMalta Awards - L-Għażliet Sportivi Nazzjonali, increase the appreciation towards the hard work consistently accomplished by the local athletes as well as encourage more children towards sport and regular physical activity.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Youth and Sport, Clyde Puli, was also present and met with the students and the nominated athletes.

The activity included the direct participation of students with dance performances from students from the Marsascala and Żabbar schools, pop singing from the St. Paul’s Bay School choir, a spectacular BMX show, modern dance from the Dancel Dance Company, hip-hop dance from the Southville Dancers as well as a technical display of basketball skills from male and female foreign professional basketball players currently playing in the top local leagues.

The winner of the quiz, related with the SportMalta Awards L-Għażliet Sportivi Nazzjonali and which was distributed around the local schools in the last days, was drawn up at the end of the event with the prize being a computer offered by Scan.
