John Grech Responds to TMIS article

Malta Independent Sunday, 4 April 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 22 years ago

With regard to the powerboats events, a company in which Dr. Grech has an interest, Dr Grech says that he has been acting as a facilitator for the organisers. The MTA was approached for sponsorship and not for the entire budget for holding the event. Dr Grech had immediately declared his interest with whoever was contacted, which included the Minister for Tourism, Francis Zammit Dimech (who never objected to his involvement), the past chairmen of the Marketing and Promotion Directorate and the Product Planning and Development Directorate as well as the current chairmen of the same directorates. Several other individuals at the MTA and the Ministry for Tourism knew of this declared interest. Dr Grech confirms that at that stage he had not formally informed the MTA board of his interest. In order that all misunderstanding be cleared, Dr. Grech also informed the MTA board that, with immediate effect, the company he has an interest in would stop all relations with the organisation responsible for the powerboat race events.

Dr Grech has offered his resignation to the Minister for Tourism following the instructions given by the government for all government appointees to offer their resignation following the formation of the new Cabinet.

Dr Grech cannot understand the orchestrated attack on him and his reputation by people who may seem to have an interest in having things changed at MTA. In all posts held Dr Grech has always fulfilled his duties faithfully, correctly, enthusiastically and honestly and it is shameful that there are people who are attempting to taint his character, the former MTA chairman said.
