Malta Independent Friday, 16 April 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 23 years ago

Edward Elias Sankary escaped from custody, and assaulted and slightly injured police constable Paul Mazzitelli, during the night of 13 and 14 October 2002.

He disobeyed police orders and prevented the constable from doing his job. Sankary was also found guilty of breaching the peace as well as the terms of a suspended sentence.

The offences were committed during the operative period of a

suspended sentence.

The court took into consideration the fact that Sankary had shown remorse and had apologised to Mr Mazzitelli, and ordered the months he had spent in preventative custody to be deducted from his two year prison term.

The court was presided over by Magistrate Abigail Lofaro while Inspector Kevin Farrugia prosecuted.
