8,420 Registered unemployed at end March

Those registering under Part 1 of the unemployment register numbered 7,746, whereas those registering under Part 2 totalled 674.

In March 2004, the age distribution of those registered as unemployed indicated that in this part of the labour supply, there were 1,155 people under the age of 20, 1,426 aged between 20 and 24, 1,042 between 25 and 29, 2,547 aged between 30 and 44 and 2,250 aged 45 or over.

When it comes to the duration of the period of unemployment, it is observed that there were 3,736 persons who have been registering for work for less than 20 weeks as at the end of March.

Taking into account those registering for work under both Part 1 and Part 2, the statistics show that there were 620 registered unemployed in Gozo and 7,800 registered unemployed in Malta. With specific reference to Gozo, there were 438 males and 182 females registering for work.

On the other hand, there are 6,240 males and 1,560 females who are unemployed in Malta.

The unemployment rate in November 2003 stood at 5.7 per cent of the labour supply. This figure translates into 6.4 per cent for men and 4.1 per cent for women.

In November 2003, the long-term unemployment figure stood at 1.9 per cent, whereas the unemployment rate for people aged 45 and over stood at four per cent during the same month.

The unemployment rate among young people was 9.2 per cent. The rate of unemployment among males under the age of 25 was 10.6 per cent, while that of females stood at 7.3 per cent
