Dr Sant said that the MLP has the duty to pay tribute to all the Maltese and Gozitan workers. The MLP believes that the country cannot move forward without work. On the contrary, the creation of jobs should be given priority more so at a time when the unemployment rate was on the rise.
Dr Sant added that in this scenario workers needed strong trade unions. Over the past years there have been attacks to undermine the strengths of trade unions. This, he said, was a mistake because in a democracy the role of trade unions was important to safeguard the interests of the workers.
The Labour leader said that the MLP will continue to give its support to the GWU and to other unions in this regard.
Dr Sant and MLP’s two deputy leaders Charles Mangion and Michael Falzon laid flowers at the foot of the monument.
