The meeting was aimed at presenting the Nationalist Party’s European Parliament candidates, all of whom were present at the meeting and gave a short talk.
Dr Borg said he was confident that there will be a positive outcome for the PN in the coming elections. “We are presenting contestants of quality for the European elections he said. The candidates running under the PN are the same people who stuck their necks out in the campaign for accession.
“Other candidates lack this consistency, even the best of lawyers finds it hard to make a case he doesn’t believe in. Our commitment towards the EU spans a quarter of a century, if not more,” Dr Borg said.
“The EU is a pool of opportunity, which is why these elections are so important,” he said.
He pointed out the poor turnout in other countries, saying that some countries barely pull in 50 per cent of their electorate.
“This is a momentous period, it is not a time to experiment; before going to the polls citizens should ask themselves who gave me this vote?”
Education, Youth and Employment Minister Louis Galea also addressed the meeting. He said Malta has a track record in terms of making its voice heard internationally.
Among others he recalled the groundbreaking work of the diplomat Arvid Parvo, whose ideas on common patrimony eventually became international law.
“The EU is overflowing with opportunity, our work is to focus and choose the best of these opportunities,” he said.
PN secretary Joe Saliba deplored the attitude of Labour-leaning papers. Who, he asked, didn’t take note of the historic significance of 1 May? “It’s as if nothing happened on Saturday, there was practically no mention of the event.”
In this context he reiterated the PN’s consistency as well as that of its candidates. “Do not vote for the party in the EP elections, vote for those who have the best credentials and I’m sure, he added, that the PN candidates will come out on top.”
