Meanwhile, a vote taken in the European Parliament to effectively block the use of quarries near World Heritage Sites was defeated, with the majority of the European People’s Party (PPE) voting against the motion.

During Thursday’s press briefing, the Prime Minister described these new studies as ones which “offer options which were previously unavailable”.

He told the press that the plans would be submitted to Cabinet for consideration on Tuesday, 8 June. However, no specific details on the proposed alternative to the controversial landfills were forthcoming during the press briefing.
