The morning started with an exhibition of an innovative sensory apparatus, Opti Music, which will shortly be available at the school.

Throughout the day, various activities were held which gave the visitors a clear idea of the sessions that are usually carried out in the school.

However, the main attraction seemed to be the hydrotherapy pool session. Here the students have the opportunity to feel more independent and less restrained, thus helping them to relax.

The multisensory room was also of great interest to everyone. This room is fully equipped with technological apparatus where the students can maintain, improve or strengthen their potential through sensory activities.

Reading took on an entirely different meaning to what is generally associated with reading.

This is because bag books were used, during which the students were given the opportunity to experience what is being read. Bag book stories have a sensory approach: for example, the students are able to smell fish while reading a story about fishing.

Children who were visiting the school with their parents were able to experience this session together with San Miguel’s students.

San Miguel School is participating in a Comenius project together with Northcott School in the UK and Heraklion Special School in Crete.

For this purpose, cultural, geographic and folklore information about these countries was gathered and an exhibition put up in the school.

The various classes in the school were assigned different tasks. For example, one class took on the task of welcoming the guests and offering coffee. In other classes various arts and crafts activities were taking place with peripethetic staff and classroom staff.

Notice boards in the school hall gave a clear indication of the school activities carried out during the scholastic year. These include information on courses held on a regular basis for the school staff by professionals and photographs of the Christmas concert and the Family Day activity, just to mention a few.

All this gives a different dimension of the curriculum as it is taught in other schools. At San Miguel the main aims are given a sensory aspect according to the different levels of the students in the school. On behalf of all the staff, San Miguel’s headmaster George Borg thanked all those who had taken the time and interest to visit the school, thus helping to make the activity a great success.
