Sedqa chose the theme of 10 snin ta’ hidma favur il-hajja, this year which emphasises the importance of sending out prevention messages and addressing people at risk.

Apart from the ongoing campaigns that Sedqa coordinates, several activities were held throughout the past month. The main events included an outreach programme for children from the Cottonera area, including fun activities as a means of healthy leisure.

Around 100 children between the ages of 5 and 13 attended the activity, held at Access in Vittoriosa. The police gave the children a demonstration to convey a message about road safety. Members of the Civil Protection also gave a talk and a demonstration about safety at home and what to do in case of an emergency. Children present for this activity were also visited by Zazu with his preventive messages. Child commissioner Mrs Sonya Camilleri also attended the event.

More than 20 parents attended a drama production that was presented for them by ABACUS as well. This production was later on discussed in a group facilitated by Sedqa staff members who were present to talk to the parents.

This event was organised by Sedqa’s Primary Prevention Team together with the support of others, including members of staff and the main sponsors who provided refreshments were namely Farsons for San Michel, Breakers and Sunkist products, Consolidated Biscuits and Joseph Hili & Sons Ltd for snacks, and Mr Tanti who provided ice-cream for the children. Sedqa thanked the Vittoriosa Local Council, Access and the volunteers, for without their help this would not have been possible.

Sedqa clients currently doing a residential rehabilitation programme at Komunità Santa Marija dedicated a day to a community activity. Sedqa’s clients helped in restoring and repainting some rooms at Dar il-Kaptan. They helped out in the cleaning of a recreational area and also coordinated a barbeque for those in residence.

The Haddiem tas-Sena award this year went to Mr Emanuel Cucciardi, care worker at the Detox Centre. The award was presented by CEO of the Foundation for Social Welfare Services, Joe Gerada, during an activity held for Sedqa staff and clients. The worker of the year is nominated and voted for by all Sedqa staff. It is the fifth year that this award has been given.

Sedqa offers its care and services within the community and in residential settings.
