The accident happened at around 9.30am, when the 39-year-old woman was driving her red Fiat 126 Bis in Gardiel Street, Marsascala and a 48-year-old man from Luqa was driving his Bedford truck in the opposite direction.
The two vehicles collided and the mother and her six-year-old daughter were trapped in their mangled car. Members of the Civil Protection Department were called to the scene to free the mother and daughter from the car.
They were rushed to St Luke’s Hospital to be treated for the serious injuries they had sustained. The girl was found to be in a critical condition and has been placed on the danger list.
The truck driver was not injured.
Duty magistrate Jacqueline Padovani Grima was informed about the case and appointed several court experts to assist with her inquiry. These included traffic expert Yana Micallef Stafrace.
Zabbar district police are investigating the incident.
