Teachers often serve as substitute parents to these children, the statement said, with a lot of children looking for adult role-models in their teachers and shelter in their schools – the kind that they do not find at home.

“We should really be grateful to those teachers who are fulfilling their duties,” the statement said. “A lot of good work is being done both by teachers and parents towards fostering a holistic education. Many families make sacrifices because they realise the value of education.”

While appreciating the achievements that have been made so far, the commission is encouraging more development in this area, possibly in the form of greater cooperation between teachers and parents. Teachers, like parents, have a responsibility towards strengthening the catholic values of students through leading by example.
