In a press release he issued yesterday to coincide with the first day of the scholastic year, Mr Abela pointed out that when MCAST was opened, the Education Minister had promised that its doors would be open to all students who met the qualification requirements.

This year a number of students had not been admitted to the college because of a lack of capacity.

While wishing all students and staff at the schools and the Education Division a successful year, Mr Abela pointed out that there are a number of areas in the sector that are in dire need of action. He said that while everyone knew that the university was experiencing financial difficulties, the government were not taking any steps, even temporary, to alleviate the situation. After all, he continued, the lack of funds is negatively affecting the students.

Mr Abela also mentioned the unions, saying that he was sure that they will always be guided by the best interests of the country and of their members.

The Labour party recognises the importance of this sector to the rest of the economy, said Mr Abela, and is ready to cooperate in the interests of the Maltese people.
