This point was a common theme in most of the graduation speeches chosen this year. The lack of funds and resources allocated to the University’s library among other departments caused the students many problems especially since recent literature was needed for their studies. Ms Dutton pointed out that “this is an extremely embarrassing situation especially there are many foreign students attending this university.”

In her speech, she called on government to include the university, the library and its workers when working on its finances. The learning process is something dynamic and it is extremely important to keep up to date with the latest publications and research and without financial resources this is impossible.

Although Ms Dutton pointed out that the students’ speeches may have a negative or critical tone, they were actually realistic. In fact, she said that often students felt they were swimming against the tide in order to reach their goal.

Ms Dutton focused on two particular points in her speech, which she felt needed urgent attention.

The tedious and confusing bureaucratic system at the University “is a big time waster”.

Many times, when faced with a problem, the student is shuttled to and from different people, as no one really knows who can solve it. Ms Dutton also pointed out that are a small number of employees who are not content with their jobs and this is reflected in the service they provide. Although this number is quite small, it is these few that are noted.

The second point Ms Dutton emphasised was the large number of clashes in the students’ timetables. The clashes arise from a lack of communication between the different faculties and departments with which the students have to deal. Ms Dutton said that it is not fair that the students have to suffer as a consequence of the lack of capacity to collaborate of those in authority. In fact most students base their timetables on credits that do not clash.

It is also important to make good use of the dissertations into which the students put many hours of study and research. More often than not, the dissertations are left lying on the shelf gathering dust and no further use is made of them. Ms Dutton suggested that different government departments should put forward suggestions to the students on the different areas where more research is needed, so the finalised work will be made use of.

Concluding, Ms Dutton stressed the importance of remaining enthusiastic when the students start working.

It is extremely important not to take things for granted or become passive like many people who have been working for many years. Students should always believe that they could change things if they want to.
