A Lesson in catering

Malta Independent Friday, 17 December 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

On 10 December we decided to go to the airport for a coffee. It was 10.40pm when we opted for the Bistro situated on the building's top floor.

Having sat down, and having made up our minds on what we want, I went to place the order. Everything normal until… 10.55pm. Four tables were still consuming their drink or whatever.

Two men and a women began lifting the chairs from the floor and placing them on their respective tables. Needless to say, instead of the soft background music, we were listening to this lovely, disturbing noise of this battle between chairs and tables, while these three employees complained what a chore this was.

In a matter of nothing, we were surrounded with chairs over our heads. In less than five minutes lights were being switched off. I really couldn't believe what was happening! First of all, it’s a really beautiful way to treat customers! Secondly, what if a tourist was in the establishment at that time? Wow, that would have been an excellent promo for lovely Malta.

Anyway, on the way out, I learnt that the place's closing time is at 11pm. Nevertheless, there are various polite manners in closing down while customers are still there. It's surely not the kind of service that the company is renowned for. I am really making it a point in never returning to the place again.
