Traffic Fines

Malta Independent Sunday, 19 December 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

From Mr S. Sammut

How commendable of some of our local councils to have installed speed cameras and traffic light cameras to instill more discipline in many a motorist.

Reckless driving is a deadly weapon in the hands of irresponsible individuals. I presume that everyone agrees wholeheartedly with this, granted that the speed limit is reasonable and that we do not have to drive at a snail’s pace on our highways or bypasses. Nevertheless, excessive speed is tantamount to irresponsible behaviour, whoever is driving. I have just one simple question to ask on the matter. What happens when a chauffeur driven Ministerial car or a government-impressed car infringes the traffic codes, drives at excessive speed and ignores traffic lights codes. Who forks out the money for the consequent fine he or she is bound to get? Can anyone enlighten me whether such fines are paid out of our national coffers or written off as Ministerial petty expenses?
