Senglea Goalkeeper denies Spartans - Senglea A 1 Hamrun S 1

Malta Independent Monday, 20 December 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Senglea and Hamrun Spartans figured in an interesting 1-1draw, that leaves both sides in the hunt for the promotion race. In fact both teams together with Mqabba, Marsa and outsiders Mosta are considered as favourites for the two Premier berths at the end of the season.

The match was more interesting in the second half with Hamrun Spartans going near especially near the end of the match but were denied by the Senglea goalkeeper Attard who saved his side on a couple of occasions with splendid saves, to make up for the goal suffered in the first half, a goal that could have been avoided.

The first half was very balanced with play mainly in midfield, with Senglea showing the better ideas in the opening stages, and Hamrun playing better especially after taking the lead.

Senglea’s first attempt at goal came after 15 minutes when Malcolm Tirchett headed wide a McKay cross.

Senglea had the edge in midfield but Hamrun opened the score in their first real danger when Stefan Sultana shot low into the net a Ryan Fenech cross. Following this goal Hamrun had some good moments even though they were never dangerous.

In the last minutes of the first half Senglea increased the pressure and managed to obtain the equaliser following a Hamrun defensive blunder with Leonid McKay pouncing on a short clearance by Jason Cordina o score from an acute angle.

In the second half the Spartans were more determined especially after the inclusion of Ibrahim Tarik and Sadowski in the early stages.

In fact Hamrun had the edge over their opponents for long stretches, with Senglea very cautios at the back and dangerous in their fast breaks, with Kenneth Abela missing two easy chances that could have Senglea the three points.

On 69 minutes Hamrun were unlucky when Stefan Sultana hit the upright following the Spartans’ best move between Kevin Borg and Mauro Brincat.

Eight minutes later George Attard effected his first decisive save when he saved from three metres a point blank shot from Tarik, following a Ryan Fenech cross.

But Attard’s best save came three minutes from time when Tarik was brilliant in his control of the ball and fried a thunderous shot from the penalty spot but Attard brought the house down saving what looked a certain winner.

Senglea ended the match with ten players when substitute Silvio Sciberras was sent off following his second bookable offence.
